This protein plays a pivotal role in regulating both the passage and retention of leukocytes. MAdCAM1 can effectively bind to both integrin alpha-4/beta-7 and L-selectin, facilitating comprehensive control over leukocyte adhesion. Both isoform 1 and isoform 2 of MAdCAM1 demonstrate the ability to adhere to integrin alpha-4/beta-7. Notably, isoform 2, distinguished by its lack of the mucin-like domain, may specialize in supporting integrin alpha-4/beta-7-dependent adhesion strengthening, independently of L-selectin binding. The protein forms homodimers to accomplish its functional roles in mediating cell adhesion.
