The Fc gamma RIII/CD16 protein is a receptor for IgG and is optimally activated upon binding to aggregated antigen-IgG complexes, initiating antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and preventing inappropriate effector cell activation. It mediates IgG effector functions on NK cells, generating memory-like adaptive NK cells to efficiently eliminate virally infected cells.
