The Niemann Pick C1/NPC1 protein is an intracellular cholesterol transporter that cooperates with NPC2 to promote cholesterol efflux from the endosomal/lysosomal compartment. NPC2 transfers unesterified cholesterol to the N-terminal domain of NPC1, where the cholesterol is bound in a hydrophobic pocket.
