Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (Mmp9) is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family. Mmp9 is secreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases to generate a mature, zinc-dependent endopeptidase enzyme that degrades collagens of type IV, V and XI, and elastin. Mmp9 is also involved in IL-8-induced mobilization of hematopoietic progenitor cells from bone marrow.
