The IL-4 protein actively participates in the B cell activation process, acting as a costimulator for DNA synthesis. It induces the expression of class II MHC molecules on resting B cells, enhances IgE and IgG1 secretion and cell surface expression, and modulates CD23 expression on lymphocytes and monocytes.
