PPT1 (palmitoyl protein thioesterase 1) crucially promotes lysosomal degradation by specifically removing thioester-linked fatty acyl groups, especially palmitate, from modified cysteine residues in proteins. Its enzymatic activity is particularly suited to acyl chain lengths of 14 to 18 carbons, facilitating the breakdown of target proteins during lysosomal degradation.
