The TSPO protein was originally thought to be a peripheral benzodiazepine receptor that binds protoporphyrin IX and isoquinoline carboxamide. TSPO (Translocator Protein) exhibits the ability to bind protoporphyrin IX, suggesting a potential role in the transport of porphyrins and heme. Initially identified as a peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor, TSPO can also bind isoquinoline carboxamides. Moreover, it plays a role in promoting cholesterol transport across mitochondrial membranes, implicating its involvement in lipid metabolism.
