Additionally, CD163 may contribute to the uptake and recycling of iron by facilitating the endocytosis of hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes and subsequent breakdown of heme. The protein exhibits a calcium-dependent and pH-dependent binding affinity for hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes, initiating a cascade of intracellular signals involving tyrosine kinase-dependent calcium mobilization, inositol triphosphate production, and the secretion of interleukin-6 (IL6) and colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF1). Furthermore, the soluble form of CD163 (sCD163), released through shedding, may exert an anti-inflammatory role.
