The M-CSF protein regulates macrophage production, differentiation, and function. It exists as an active disulfide-linked homodimer outside of cells, generated through proteolytic cleavage. It may also play a role in placental development. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants. M-CSF is widely expressed in tissues such as placenta, spleen, and 25 other tissues.
