The M-CSF protein regulates macrophage production, differentiation, and function. It exists as an active disulfide-linked homodimer outside of cells, generated through proteolytic cleavage. The M-CSF protein is a cytokine that plays a key role in regulating the production, differentiation, and function of macrophages. It exists in an active form as a disulfide-linked homodimer, which is found outside of cells. This active form is believed to be generated through the proteolytic cleavage of membrane-bound precursors. Additionally, this protein may be involved in the development of the placenta. Alternative splicing gives rise to multiple transcript variants. The M-CSF protein exhibits widespread expression in various tissues, including the placenta (RPKM 19.9), spleen (RPKM 19.7), and 25 other tissues.
