Specificity :
Recognizes the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus, a virus that causes hemorrhagic fever. Ebola hemorrhagic fever is potentially lethal and is characterized by a wide range of symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, generalized pain or malaise, and sometimes internal and external bleeding. The cause of death is usually hypovolemic shock or organ failure. Mortality rates are extremely high, the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus is the most lethal (up to 90% mortality rate). The viruses are characterized by a long, filamentous morphology surrounded by a protein/lipid viral envelope and are transmitted by direct contact with infected blood, body fluids or tissues. Recognizes high molecular weight proteins under non-reducing conditions and a band at approximately 30kD under reducing conditions when used in Western blotting.
