Specificity :
Detects cathepsin B, a lysosomal cysteine protease which functions as both a endopeptidase and a carboxypeptidase. Together with cathepsins D and L, cathepsin B is one of the most abundant proteases in the lysosome, and participates in intracellular protein degradation. Cathepsin B is thought to play an increasingly important role in apoptosis and its release from the lysosome under cell stress leads to Bid cleavage, cytochrome C release and nuclear fragmentation. Cathepsin B is also known as amyloid precursor protein secretase and is involved in the proteolytic processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP). Incomplete processing of APP is thought to be a causative factor in Alzheimer disease. Over-expression of cathepsin B has been associated with esophageal adenocarcinoma and other tumors, and has in particular been implicated in tumor invasion and metastasis.
