Background :

MRP8/S100A8 and MRP14/S100A9 are members of the S100 family proteins containing two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs . By a Ca2+ dependent manner S100A8/A9 forms Calprotectin, a heterodimeric inflammatory mediator of inflammation found in the cytoplasm of neutrophils and expressed on the membrane of monocytes . S100A8 is expressed myeloid differentiation, in chronic inflammations, and expressed constitutively or induced in epithelial cells during dermatose. Elevated serum level of S100A8 has been linked to various inflammatory disorders including cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic bronchitis . In cancer, S100A8 has been linked inflammation-associated cancer and a therapeutic target for breast cancer .
