Background :

8-Oxoguanine glycosylase (OGG1) is an enzyme responsible for the removal of 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG), a mutagenic base byproduct that emerges as a result of reactive oxygen species (ROS) exposure. The action of OGG1 involves lyase activity for chain cleavage. Two major groups of alternative splice variants exist for this gene. Type 1 variants end with exon 7 and type 2 variants end with exon 8. The N-terminal region for all variants is the same. This region contains a mitochondrial targeting signal that is necessary for mitochondrial localization. Several alternative splice variants for OGG1 have been identified, yet the nature of every variant is not fully understood.
