Background :

BMI1 (B lymphoma Mo-MLV insertion region 1 homolog) is a member of the polycomb group genes. BMI1 and Ring1 together greatly increase the E3 ubiquitin ligase activity of the Ring2 catalytic subunit. By repressing the p16Ink4a and p19Arf genes, BMI1 has an important part in the regulation of cell proliferation and senescence. This gene is also necessary for maintenance of adult hematopoietic and neural stem cells. Diseases associated with BMI1 include embryonal cancer and erythroplakia.
