Background :
MYSM1 (Myb-like, SWIRM and MPN domain-containing protein 1) is a JAMM domain containing zinc metalloprotease that acts a deubiquitinylating enzyme specific for mono-ubiquitinylated histone H2A. MYSM1 acts by coordinating histone acetylation and deubiquitination, and destabilizing the association of linker histone H1 with nucleosomes. In addition, MYSM1 participates in transcriptional regulation events in androgen receptor-dependent gene activation. Levels of monoubiquitinylated H2A are dramatically decreased in prostate tumors, suggesting MYSM1 expression may serve as a cancer marker.
