Product Description :
Highly purified native human Retinol Binding Protein.
Background :
Retinol is the alcohol form of vitamin A. Derivatives of retinol replacing the alcohol functional group form a class of molecules knows as retinoids which play critical roles in vision, embryonic gene expression, and bone and skin health. Retinol binding protein binds retinol and regulates its transport and metabolism. RBP4 is the sole molecule used for transport of retinol in blood. In serum it is normally complexed to transerytrhin, which facilitates uptake by the glomeruli membranes, but a fraction remains unbound and is absorbed by renal proximal tubules. Injury to the proximal tubules is associated with renal tubulointerstitial nephritis caused by environmental allergens or infection, and can be a secondary factor of glomerulopathies. Injury can result in failure to absorb RBP, which is then lost to the urine as a variety of processed subspecies. As such, elevated levels of RBP in the urine can be used as an indicator or proximal tubular injury, and a broader indicator of kidney disease.
