Background :
Vimentin is one of four type II intermediate filament (IF) proteins; Desmin, Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and Peripherin being the others. Vimentin is the most widely distributed of all IF proteins. It is typically expressed in leukocytes, blood vessel endothelial cells, and mesenchymal cells such as fibroblasts. Vimentin filaments help support cellular membranes. Vimentin networks also may help keep the nucleus and other organelles in a defined place within the cell.
