Background :
The human Cullin family of genes consists of Cul-1, Cul-2, Cul-3, Cul-4a, Cul-4b, and Cul-5. Among the 6 members, Cul-1 and Cul-2 are very well characterized. Cul-2 is homologous to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae cdc53 gene. Studies have shown that Cul-1 forms an E3 ubiquitin-ligase, called the SCF complex (Skp1 and F-box protein such as bTrCp or FWD1), which controls the proteolysis of G1 cell cycle regulatory proteins.
