Background :
The cluster of differentiation (CD) proteins are a group of surface molecules so named for their use in the identification and classification of leukocytes. The structure and function of CD proteins varies greatly and includes a multitude of receptors involved in cell adhesion, signal transduction, and antigen recognition. For example, CD8 (cytotoxic) and CD8 (helper) are well established T-lymphocyte markers, and function as co-receptors for MHC-I and MHC-II, respectively. CD34, a single chain transmembrane glycoprotein, is selectively expressed in human lymphoid and myeloid hematopoietic progenitor cells. Staining for CD34 has been used to measure angiogenesis, which reportedly predicts tumor recurrence.
