Background :
Chromogranin A (CgA) is a 49 kDa acidic glycoprotein widely expressed in neuroendocrine cells, where it is the major constituent of secretory granules. CgA resides in neuroendocrine cells throughout the body, including the large and small intestine, adrenal medulla and pancreatic islets. CgA serves as a useful marker for carcinoid tumors, phenochromocytomas, paragangliomas, and other neuroendocrine tumors. Coexpression of chromogranin A and neuron specific enolase (NSE) is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms. Expression of CgA in neuroendocrine tumors can be regulated by COX-II mediated generation of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), suggesting that COX-II expression may contribute to the generation of CgA and the pathogenesis of neuroendocrine tumors.
