Background :
The cluster of differentiation (CD) proteins are a group of surface molecules so named for their use in the identification and classification of leukocytes. The structure and function of CD proteins varies greatly and includes a multitude of receptors involved in cell adhesion, signal transduction, and antigen recognition. For example, CD8 (cytotoxic) and CD8 (helper) are well established T-lymphocyte markers, and function as co-receptors for MHC-I and MHC-II, respectively. CD23 is a 45 kDa glycoprotein present on a subpopulation of freshly isolated peripheral blood and tonsil B cells, and strongly expressed on EBV-transformed B lymphoblasts. The CD23 molecule is identical to the low affinity IgE receptor found on B cells. Expression of CD23 occurs in neoplastic cells from cases of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and some cases of centroblastic/centrocytic lymphoma.
