Background :
Cathepsin D is an aspartyl endoproteinase distributed to the lysosome that participates in the degradation of proteins at an acidic pH. The proteolytic activity of Cathepsin D is known to play a role in antigen processing, cell proliferation and tissue renewal, and prohormone activation. Synthesized as a 54 kDa precursor, Cathepsin D is then proteolytically processed to an intermediate 48 kDa single chain which matures into more stable 34 kDa (heavy chain) and 14 kDa (light chain) subunits. As an estrogen-regulated lysosomal protease, overexpression of Cathepsin D in breast cancer is known to correlate with increased metastatic potential and shorter patient survival.
