Background :
Autophagy, the process of bulk degradation of cellular proteins through an autophagosomic-lysosomal pathway, is important for normal growth control and may be defective in tumor cells. Golgi-associated PIST (PDZ domain protein interacting specifically with TC10) has been characterized by its ability to bind and regulate the expression of membrane associated proteins. A neural isoform of PIST (nPIST) has been linked to autophagy and neurodegenerative disease by mediating the interaction between the delta2-glutamate receptor and Beclin-1, a Bcl-2-interacting protein homolog of the yeast autophagy gene apg6.
