Background :
Protein arginine N-methyltransferases (PRMTs) catalyze the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to a guanidine nitrogen of arginine. PRMT1 methylates arginine residues in glycine-rich areas of histone H4 as well as many non-histone substrates that regulate transcriptional activation, mRNA processing, and signal transduction. In contrast, PRMT5 methylates arginines in proline-, glycine-, methionine-rich motifs and is known to interact with Jak kinases. PRMT2 inhibits NF-κB-dependent transcription and promotes apoptosis.
