Background :
SUV39H1 is one of the founding members of the SET domain protein family whose major function is the modulation of gene activity. SUV39H1 has been shown to possess intrinsic histone methyltransferase activity, and specifically methylates Lys9 of histone H3. The degree of methylation by SUV39H1 varies within distinct regions of the chromatin, as H3 Lys9 in constitutive pericentric heterochromatin is trimethylated, while in euchromatin it is dimethylated.
