Background :
Glutamate receptors constitute the principal excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in the brain. Two classes of Glutamate receptors exist: inotropic receptors and Metabotropic receptors. Inotropic glutamate receptors are oligomeric complexes which are ligandgated calcium channels. Metabotropic glutamate receptors, on the otherhand, are G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), which when activated can activate phospholipases or adenylylcyclase, depending on the neuron.
