Assay Background :

Antibodies bind to the normal and mutant types of p53 protein and are used to detect increased expression of p53. For many types of tumors, the detection of p53 is predictive. The wild-type p53 protein is present in normal cells, but, due to the extremely short half-life, it is not detected using standard immunohistochemical methods. Somatic mutations of the p53 gene are often found in various tumor processes. The mutant p53 protein is more stable than the wild-type protein and accumulates in tumor cells in significant concentration.
