Background :

Lumican, belonging to the small leucine-rich proteoglycan (SLRP) Class II subfamily, binds collagen fibrils and the hydrophilic glycosaminoglycans to regulate interfibrillar spacings. Lumican consists of 11 leucine-rich repeats and 1 LRRNT domain. Lumican is a the major keratan sulfate proteoglycan of the cornea, but is also distributed in interstitial collagenous matrices throughout the body. Studies suggest Lumican may regulate collagen fibril organization and circumferential growth, corneal transparency, epithelial cell migration, and tissue repair.
