Background :

The protein called Glycoprotein non-metastatic B or also called Transmembrane glycoprotein NMB (GPNMB/NMB), or Transmembrane glycoprotein HGFIN is an interesting protein that is up regulated in many cancer cells including glioblastomas and melanomas but it is also expressed in macrophages, podocytes and in the ciliary body of the eye. Expression is barely detectable in healthy brain but increases in brain cancer and other pathological conditions. The protein is a plasma membrane localized protein, and GPNMB/NMB is a target for anti-cancer therapy by antibodies for glioblastomas and other cancers because of its high expression in these cancers and its accessibility on the plasma membrane to antibody mediated approaches of anti-cancer therapy.
