Background :

CD2 is a 50 kDa single-chain type I transmembrane glycoprotein, originally defined as the sheep erythrocyte receptor. CD2 primarily binds CD58 on antigen-presenting cells and induces costimulatory signals in T cells. CD2 is one of the earliest T-cell lineage-restricted antigens to appear during T-cell differentiation, and it is expressed on most thymocytes, peripheral T cells and NK cells. Some B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas show aberrant expression of CD2, which may represent clonal expansion of CD2+ B lymphocytes that normally constitute a small fraction of peripheral B lymphocytes. Additionally, aberrant CD2 expression has been found in some acute myeloid leukemia almost exclusively restricted to the M3 and M4Eo variants.
