Background :

CD83 is a cell surface marker that is predominantly expressed on mature human and mouse dendritic cells (DCs). In humans, CD83 is expressed by circulating and tissue DCs, including interdigitating reticulum cells within the spleen, lymphocytes, Langerhan’s cells within the epidermis, and DCs within the thymic medulla, but can also be found in a select number of other cells depending on their condition or state of maturation. In mice, CD83 is expressed on the cell surface of mature DC populations, purified thymic DCs, lymphocytes, and bone marrow-derived DCs, among other select types of cells in certain conditions and states. Generally, CD83 expression correlates with upregulation of HLA class II antigen expression, and serves as a selective marker for DC maturation and activation. Its expression is essential for the regulation of immune system development and maintenance.
