Background :
Dendritic cell-specific transmembrane protein (DC-STAMP) is a recently described, 470-amino acid, transmembrane protein with a critical role in TNSF11-mediated osteogenesis and giant cell formation. It has also been implicated in a role for inducing tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase expression in osteoclast precursors. DC-STAMP was originally discovered in myeloid dendritic cells as an interleukin-4 (IL-4)-inducible protein consisting of seven transmembrane domains. DC-STAMP is widely expressed with highest levels observed in kidney, liver, lung and lymph node, along with preferential expression in both mature and immature dendritic cells. Lower levels of expression have been observed in bone marrow, leukocytes, pancreas and spleen, and also in freshly isolated B-cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).
