Background :
Receptor-type tyrosine-protein phosphatase C, also known as Leukocyte common antigen (L-CA) or CD45 and encoded by the human gene PTPRC or CD45 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that belongs to the PTP family. PTPs are signaling molecules that regulate cellular process like cell growth, differentiation and mitotic cycle. CD45 has many isoforms that are distributed throughout the immune system according to cell type. These arise because of alternative splicing of RA, RB, and RC exons. CD45 and its isoforms non-covalently associate with lymphocyte phosphatase-associated phosphoprotein (LPAP) on T and B lymphocytes. CD45RO is one of the isoforms of CD45 that facilitates T cell activation. It is also the shortest isform which lack the RA, RB, and RC exons. Mutations in CD45 have been associated with mulitple sclerosis and severe combined immunodeficiency.
