Background :

Myeloid Differentiation-2 (MD-2) is a small secreted glycoprotein that binds with cytokine-like affinities to both the hydrophobic portion of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and the extracellular domain of Toll-like Receptor 4 (TLR4). TLR-4 is activated by its natural ligand(s), the presence of extracellular MD-2, and most lipopolysaccharides (glycan complexes which may be produced by Gram-negative bacteria). MD-2 also interacts with TLR2 in response to cell wall components of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
