Nucleophosmin, also known as Nucleolar phosphoprotein B23, Nucleolar protein NO38, or Numatrin, and encoded by the gene name NPM1 and NPM, is a major nucleolar phosphoprotein that is mainly located within the nucleolar granular compartment, where preribosomes are assembled. Nucleophosmin is a multifunctional protein that is overexpressed in actively proliferating cells and cancer cells. It is involved in cellular processes such as ribosome biogenesis, centrosome duplication, protein chaperoning, histone assembly, cell proliferation, and regulation of tumor suppressors p53/TP53 and ARF.
