Background :

Emerin is a LEM domain-containing protein found in the nuclear membrane in vertebrates. The LEM domain, a conserved globular domain of approximately 40 amino acids, is present in many nuclear membrane associated proteins. Emerin is known to interact with nuclear lamins, barrier-to-autointegration factor (BAF), nesprin-1 alpha, and a transcription repressor. Functionally, this protein mediates membrane anchorage to the cytoskeleton, stabilizes and promotes formation of the nuclear actin cortical network, and inhibits beta-catenin activity by preventing nuclear accumulation. Mutations to emerin result in Dreifuss-Emery muscular dystrophy, an X-linked inherited degenerative myopathy. This protein appears to play a role in response to mechanical strain and the control of apoptosis due to strain. Emerin may also play a part in chromosome location and anchoring.
