Background :

Krueppel-like factor 1, also known as Erythroid krueppel-like transcription factor (EKLF) and encoded by the gene name KLF1 or EKLF, binds to the DNA sequence CCACACCCT found in the beta hemoglobin promoter and may act as a general switch factor during erythropoiesis. KLF1 localizes to the nucleus and col-localizes with SUMO1 in nuclear speckles. Expression in KLF1 is restricted to adult bone marrow and fetal liver. KLF1 can be acetylated on Lys274 which appears to be the major site affecting KLF transactivation acitivty. Mutations in KLF1 have been associated with Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia 4.
