Background :

AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) is a fetal serum protein that shows an increased expression in many different clinical conditions and has been associated with hepatocellular carcinoma and germ cell tumors. It has also been linked to the development of gastric cancer. Women with pregestational diabetes have commonly shown a decrease in maternal serum AFP during the second trimester. AFP has been used as a pregnancy monitoring biomarker in many different mammalian species.
