Background :

Discovered on gastrointestinal stromal tumors protein 1 (Dog1), also known as Anoctamin-1, is a novel multi-pass membrane protein belonging to the anoctamin family. Dog1 functions as a Ca2+-activated Cl- channel and is a required component of tracheal development. Expression of Dog1 is elevated in the gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), KIT signaling-driven mesenchymal tumors of the GI tract. It is also expressed at more moderate levels in epithelia from foregut, kidney, lung, pancreas and salivary glands. Recent studies suggest that it may serve a roll as a diagnostic marker in the classification of GISTs.
