Background :
Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) also known as 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 receptor is a member of the nuclear steroid hormone receptor superfamily which regulate gene transcription by interacting with response elements in gene promoters. VDR binds with the retinoid X receptor (RXR) from specific DNA sequences in the promoter region of vitamin D response elements (VDREs). VDR has been implicated in a variety of physiological functions including effects on growth and differentiation in normal and malignant cells. These effects are mediated through a single ligand, calcitriol. Cacitriol the active metabolite of vitamin D is a known regulator of calcium homeostasis but it also has numerous other functions including inhibition of proliferation of cancer cells and suppression of T-cell proliferation and cytokine production.
