Background :

Actin (~42 kDa) is a major component of the cytoskeleton. Actin can be resolved on the basis of its isoelectric points into 3 distinctive components:alpha, beta, and ɣ. Actin (Ab-3) recognizes actin of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle cells, including alpha- and ɣ-isotypes of all muscle groups. It does not react with other mesenchymal cells except for myoepithelium. It also does not react with vascular endothelial cells, fibroblasts, or connective tissue. Neoplastic cells of non-muscle sarcomas, such as carcinomas, melanomas, and lymphomas, are also negative. This antibody is especially useful for the distinction between leiomyosarcoma and other spindle cell neoplasms, and in particular, the identification of rhabdomyoblasts.
