Background :

Hsp90alpha (GenBank target symbol = HSPCA, Accession number = NM_005348) is a heat shock protein involved in signal transduction, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis. The Hsp90alpha isoform, but not the Hsp90beta isoform, is expressed extracellularly. Hsp90alpha has been reported to interact with MMP-2 and promote its activation, which may play a role in cancer cell invasiveness. Hsp90alpha transcription has been reported to be upregulated by interleukin-4 (IL-4). Native Hsp90alpha exists primarily as oligomers and frequently appears as a dimer on non-denaturing polyacrylamide gels.
