Background :
Spectrin beta chain, erythrocyte (SPTB) is also known as Beta-I spectrin. Spectrin is the main member, along with band 4.1 and actin that form of the cytoskeletal framework underlying the erythrocyte plasma membrane. Spectrin is made up of nonhomologous chains, alpha and beta, which aggregate to form dimers, tetramers, and higher polymers. Defects in SPTB are the cause of elliptocytosis type 3 (EL3), as well as spherocytosis type 2 (SPH2) which are genetically heterogeneous, autosomal dominant hematologic disorders.
