Background :

SMURF2 (Smad ubiquitin regulatory factor 2) is a SMAD specific E3 ubiquitin protein ligase. Both SMURF2 and Smad ubiquitin regulatory factor 1 (SMURF1) play an important role in TFG-β signaling and are known to suppress transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) family signaling. Mutations in SMURF2 have been associated with tumor formation. SMURF2 is known to interact with SMAD1, SMAD2 and SMAD7 to promote ubiquitination and proteasome-dependent degradation of these proteins. SMURF2 interacts with all members of the Smad family except Smad4. This protein is expressed in a variety of tissues and cell lines.
