Background :

Host cell factor 1 (HCFC1), also known as C1 factor or VCAF, is a collective name referring to a family of polypeptides derived from a 300 kDa transcriptional coactivator protein. The full length protein contains 5 kelch repeats, and is cleaved into at least twelve different functional polypeptides of varying molecular weights. These polypeptides have been implicated in mRNA processing, transcriptional coactivation, and cell-cycle progression. The full length HCFC1 is abundantly expressed in the liver, pituitary gland, skeletal muscle, eye, and brain. It is regulated by post-translational modifications, including O-glycosylation and ubiquitination. HCFC1 is processed by HCFC1R1, which results in the cytoplasmic localization of HCFC1. Previous studies have indicated that the HCFC1 may be an important switch between active and latent cycles of the herpes simplex virus.
