Background :

The PTF1A (pancreas specific transcription factor, 1a) protein is a component of the pancreas transcription factor 1 complex (PTF1), and is known to play a critical role in the development of mammalian pancreatic stem cell lineages. More specifically, when expressed concurrently with the PDX-1 protein, PTF1A plays a role in determining whether cells allocated to the pancreatic progenitor pool continue on towards pancreatic organogenesis, or revert back to duodenal fates. The PTF1A protein is also thought to be involved in the maintenance of exocrine pancreas-specific gene expression, including elastase 1 and amylase. Further more, mutations in this gene have been shown to cause cerebellar agenesis, while the loss of PTF1A expression has been seen in ductal-type pancreatic cancers.
