Background :

Metadherin is a type 2 transmembrane protein who's overexpression was first described in breast cancers. It plays an important role in the metastasis of breast cancers into the lungs as a secondary site of development. Antibodies reactive to the lung-homing domain of metadherin and siRNA-mediated knockdown of metadherin expression in breast cancer cells inhibited experimental lung metastasis, indicating that tumor cell metadherin mediates localization at the metastatic site (Brown, 2009).
