Background :

Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 2 (TIMP-2) is a member of the protease inhibitor I35 (TIMP) family. TIMP-2 binds with the catalytic zinc cofactors of metalloproteinases, thereby forming a complex and irreversibly activating them. High concentrations of TIMP-2 have been shown to down-regulate progelatinase A activation. TIMP-2 performs a regulatory role for cell proliferation. It interacts with several MMPs including MMP-1 to MMP-3, MMP-7 to MMP-10, MMP-13 to MMP-16, MMP-19, and MT1-MMP. MMP-2 activity is inhibited through interaction with TIMP-2.
