Background :

PKR is an interferon-inducible serine/threonine kinase activated by double stranded RNA. The activation of PKR is accompanied by phosphorylation at multiple sites, including Thr446 and Thr451 in the PKR activation loop. PKR phosphorylates the alpha-subunit of the eukaryotic initiation factor-2 and inhibits protein synthesis. PKR also phosphorylates p53 and plays a role in the interferon response to viral infections.
