Collagens are major fibrous structural elements of cartilage, tendon, bone, skin, lung, and blood vessels. Type VII collagen exists as a dimer of two triple helical coils, each of which is composed of three a1 (VII) subunits. Type VII collagen forms a major portion of anchoring fibrils that provide for the structural stability of subbasal lamina. Type VII collagen is associated with type IV collagen in anchoring plaques.
